TO MY DARLING SNOWFLAKE...

Dear Snowflake.

So young, so innocent and so naïve these are all the things I see you as.
But this world isn’t as glamorous as everyone would like you to believe. An adventure awaits you, new people, a new place and a chance to create a new identity.
Rhodes is a wonderful educational and social environment to be in. A few things you should remember; acceptance, tolerance and understanding requires an open mind so FOR GOD SAKE!!! Do not lock your self up in a bubble!
Don’t turn into “plastic” your character is a major part of building friendships and companions that will last you a life time. Your “Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” so don’t be pressured to do anything you don’t want to, live life to the fullest, have no regrets.
One of the most difficult aspects of living life independently is to strike a correct balance between social and an academic life. Don’t lose sight of your goal…remember your not carrying a burden but the pride of those who support you.
Make choices that are not selfish but choices that take into consideration those around you. You are not just a survivor but the hero in your own story; SO LIVE IT!
I hope this helps to motivate you to stand with pride when you take those steps into the gates of knowledge as “Success is an act of exploration. That means the first thing that you have to find is the unknown. Learning is searching; anything else is just waiting.”
And remember: You alone have the power to transform your thoughts into physical reality; you, alone, can dream and make them come true.
I lOVE YOU....
Snow

    Dear Snow,

Wow - the advice that you give in your post is freakishly similar to the advice that I would have given my younger self upon arriving at Uni. The words of wisdom that you give are definitely something I would have really appreciated hearing then, as I even appreciate them now! ;)

I especially liked it when you said “Character [really] is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” It is so important to remember this, as my character will ultimately define the sort of man I become, so my reputation is really just my ego needing to have its back scratched. Also, your post has reminded me to keep from placing myself into a bubble, and to constantly discover new things.

Thanks snow, keep up with the words of wisdom.

    Much respect.
    Damien

How sweet, you write a letter to Snowflake telling him not to let anyone pressure him into doing something that he does not want to do. You also tell Snowflake not to change who he is and that he has the capacity to make friends that will not influence him but friends that will last him a life time. I remember asking little Pilly if she recalls when her then friends pressured her into drinking alcohol even though she had never touched it before. I am reminded by this when you tell Snowflake that his character is a major part of building friendship that will last him a life time. Little Pilly never had anyone warning her about misleaders but that little clever soul knew and never forgot what she had came to varsity for. I noticed you told Snowflake not lose sight of his goal; guess great minds think alike hey.
